Downtown Public Art The "Train Lady" will be placed at the Wilson Train Station. This concrete sculpture is a larger than life lady sitting on a bench, with room enough to encourage tourists and locals to sit next to her in a photograph. The sculpture is the representation of a motherly figure with no particular color or ethic characteristics. The "Train Lady" will warmly welcome the over 35,000 people who annually use the services of the Wilson Train Station. This public art project has been funded in part by the North Carolina Arts Council and the Wilson Tourism Authority. When completed this summer, the WDDC Public Art Committee will begin plans for the naming of our new addition to the Wilson community.
The first step in the creation of the "Train Lady" is the construction of cement over a rebar armature.
Step 2
Artist Virginia Bullman and Paula Holcomb look over the sculpture as the cement forms her body.
Step 3
The "Train Lady" in her current phase. Bullman and Artist LaNelle Davis are now at a point where, except for a "finish coat" on her hat, the mosaic work can begin. The weather is now changing and it is unclear whether the mosaic work will start soon or early next spring. The artists can not do the mosaic work if the temperature drops below 40 degrees. Mosaics are made with broken china used for her clothing and accessories. |
