Downtown Wilson, NC, is showing signs of a great turnaround. Four new restaurants have opened in the past 18 months, as well as charming specialty shops and other small businesses. The City of Wilson is participating in a five-year North Carolina Rehab Code pilot program focusing on finding ways to encourage an increased number of downtown renovation projects over new construction projects by eliminating unnecessary restrictions in the renovation of historic buildings. Downtown Wilson was named a National Main Street Community in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 in recognition of achieving national standards for commercial district revitalization. Downtown Wilson was also designated as a North Carolina Main Street Community in 1982 because of its historic architectural beauty and strong community involvement. In 1983 the area was designated as part of the National Register of Historic Places recognizing the area as the Tobacco Warehouse Historic District. |
