Historic Downtown Wilson NC was designated as a North Carolina Main Street Community in 1982 because of its historic architectural beauty and strong community involvement. In 1983 the area was designated as part of the National Register of Historic Places recognizing the area as the Tobacco Warehouse Historic District. Downtown Wilson was named as a national Main Street Community in 2002 in recognition of achieving national standards for commercial district revitalization. We are very pleased with these accomplishments. The City of Wilson, North Carolina, is currently participating in a five-year North Carolina Rehab Code pilot program focusing on finding ways to encourage an increased number of downtown renovation projects over new construction projects by eliminating unnecessary restrictions in the renovation of historic buildings. The City of Wilson, North Carolina, is one of ten top All-American Cities, earning national recognition in 1972 and 2002.
